Qualifying for the AIME (and pushing further to the USAMO or Distinction tiers) is not just a test of raw mathematical talent; it is a test of game theory, strict time management, and optimized studying. You do not need to solve all 25 questions to advance. Instead, you need a precise strategy detailing exactly how many questions to answer, which ones to skip, and how to navigate the psychological traps hidden throughout the exam.
Whether your goal is securing the AIME cutoff or pushing into the Distinction/Honor Roll (DHR) brackets, mastering the pacing of the entire exam is mandatory. Here is the exact numerical breakdown, the textbook chapters you need to read, and the question-by-question playbook you need to succeed.
Part 1: The "Safe" Math—Exactly How Many Do You Need?
Getting all of the first 10 questions right guarantees you a baseline score of at least 60 points. In fact, if you are taking the AMC 12, getting just the first 10 right and leaving the remaining 15 blank yields a score of 82.5—which, in particularly difficult years, has actually been enough to qualify for AIME!
However, you want a comfortable buffer. Assuming you make absolutely zero silly mistakes, here are the strict baseline benchmarks to secure qualification:
Qualifying Through the AMC 10: If you answer 15 questions correctly and leave the rest blank, you secure a score of 105. Today, a 105 almost guarantees qualification for the AIME.
Qualifying Through the AMC 12: You only need to plan to solve a minimum of 12 questions correctly.
But what if you want to be almost guaranteed to qualify, regardless of how high the cutoff swings that year, or aim for Distinction? You need to aim slightly higher:
AMC 12 "Distinction" (DHR) Threshold: Solving 15–16 correctly is very good; getting 17 or 18 correct gives you highly decent chances of earning Distinction.
Part 2: The Pre-Scan Strategy (Do Not Ignore the Back of the Test)
To hit those thresholds, you cannot just answer questions at random. Before you solve a single problem, take 30 seconds to look through the entire exam.
I learned this lesson the hard way. My strongest subject has always been geometry. Once, while taking the AMC 12, I assumed problem 25 would simply be beyond my limits, so I didn't even bother to look at it. When time was almost up, I finally glanced at it and slapped my head. "Oh my god, it’s my favorite subject!" But by then, I didn't have the time left to solve it. If I had, I would have secured Distinction.
To prevent this, use this system as you scan:
Put a Star (⭐): Mark every problem where you know the subject well and are 100% comfortable with the setup.
Put a Check (✔): Mark problems that look standard and you think you have a solid shot at.
Put an X (✖): Mark problems that are clearly beyond your limits, look like massive time-sinks, or cover a subject you are weak in. Save these for the absolute end.
Part 3: The Three-Phase Execution Strategy
Phase 1: Navigating the "Opening Traps" (Questions 1–10)
For anyone with moderate experience working through past official exams or standard textbooks, the first 10 questions are usually approachable. However, the test writers always hide a few "troll" problems—or "opening traps"—in this section.
These are curveballs that consume far more time than expected because you either fail to see the obvious solution or simply cannot think fast enough under pressure.
AMC 10 Goal: Get 9 correct (Allows 1 blank or mistake). Note: If you are currently scoring below 70, you must master the first 10 questions before worrying about anything else.
AMC 12 Goal: Get 7 or 8 correct (Allows 2 or 3 blanks or mistakes).

Phase 2: Mastering the Mid-Game (Questions 11–20)
This is the meat of the exam where you should spend the majority of your time. These questions test pure, topic-based knowledge and multi-step problem-solving.
AMC 10 Strategy: Attempt at least 5 questions in this section (more if possible). Choose these five beforehand by giving preference to your strongest subjects (Algebra, Geometry, Number Theory, Combinatorics). However, if a question outside your best topic seems surprisingly easy, do it!
AMC 12 Strategy: Focus on familiar topics, particularly precalculus (conics) and Algebra 2 (logarithms, complex numbers, and trigonometry).
The Mid-Game Hack: If you are already good with questions 1–10 and your sole goal is qualifying for AIME, you do not need to stress over the final five problems. Instead of buying full mock exams, buy the Score150 Target Pack 11–20 to exclusively strengthen your mid-section accuracy.
What Textbooks Should You Use for the Mid-Game?
For AMC 10: Master all the review sections in the Art of Problem Solving (AoPS) Introduction series.
For AMC 12: Use the AoPS Precalculus and Intermediate Algebra books. Do not bother studying the vectors and matrices in AoPS Precalculus. Instead, strictly focus on mastering Chapters 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7 (which heavily cover trigonometry and complex numbers). For logarithms, Chapter 13 of Intermediate Algebra has excellent problems. Master the review sections of all these chapters.
Phase 3: The Endgame (Questions 21–25) & Pushing for USAMO
If you are trying to qualify for the USAMO or get DHR, surviving the first 20 questions isn't enough. In the time you have left, you must solve at least 2 or 3 of the final 5 questions.
This is incredibly difficult. These last five questions require non-straightforward solutions, extreme algebraic manipulation, and the ability to experiment and play around to figure out patterns.

The "Real-Time Checking" Rule
Many people will advise you to "leave time at the end to check your work." Over my past experience qualifying for AIME several times in high school, I believe that is terrible advice. It wastes time you could be using to solve problems in the final 10.
My advice: Check your solutions while you do the problem. Do your computations slowly and steadily. Every big multiplication or operation must be checked right there to make sure it is correct. At the very end, simply make sure your final answer and solution make logical sense.
Never Skip "Unfamiliar" Practice Problems
When I was preparing for the AMC, I used to look for textbook problems that perfectly mirrored past AMC questions, and I skipped the ones that didn't. This was a terrible mistake. A problem in an AoPS book might not have appeared on a past exam, but it could very easily appear on a future AMC—and that actually happened to me multiple times!
Never skip problems. Do ALL the review and challenge problems in your textbooks. If you give up on a problem, read thoroughly through the solution, and take notes in your notebook in plain English. Write down things like:
"When to use the roots of unity filter."
"When to use complementary counting."
"When to substitute a variable for a numerical value to make the expression simpler."
Come back to these problems at regular intervals. You may think it is a waste of time, but deep down, your brain is learning to recognize the relations between different types of problems.
